Vol. 218 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - East Cork Housing Schemes.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reasons for delay in building six non-municipal houses at Saleen, Cloyne, County Cork; if he is aware that the building of these houses has already been held up for over three years owing to protracted negotiations between the Department of Lands and Cork County Council; and if he will now sanction the immediate building of the houses.

I approved of Cork County Council's proposal for the acceptance of a tender for this scheme on 24th September last. Application for sanction to the raising of a loan to finance the scheme was not received until the end of last week.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the number of houses proposed by Cork County Council for erection in Carrigtwohill, East Cork, (b) the number sanctioned by his Department for erection, (c) the total number of persons who have applied to the local authority for tenancy of these houses, (d) the number passed as qualified, (e) the number rejected as not qualified, and (f) if he will give a list of those rejected as not qualified and the grounds for rejection of each applicant.

Cork County Council's proposal for the erection of 22 houses at Carrigtwohill was approved by me last January and the houses are in course of construction. I understand from the council that 48 applications for rehousing in the scheme have been received and are at present being investigated by them.

Could the Minister indicate to the House and to the people of East Cork and, in particular, the people of Carrigtwohill for whom Deputy Corry is so solicitous, when it is likely that the 24 houses will be built in Carrigtwohill?

As far as I understand, they are at about the halfway stage at the moment. That is my information.
