Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Discussions with Britain.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if the suggested negotiations between EFTA and the EEC, referred to by the British Prime Minister as bridge building between the two groups, are likely to have any impact on the Anglo-Irish trade discussions; and if he is kept fully informed of the position relative to such discussions.

The exploration of the suggestion of a link between the European Free Trade Association and the European Economic Community is still at a preliminary stage. It is unlikely, therefore, to have a direct impact on our present trade negotiations with the British though the possible implications of such a link are, of course, being kept in mind. The Government are following closely developments in the matter.

Could the Taoiseach tell us if he is receiving any information in relation to these negotiations, if they do exist?

I think it would be an overstatement to describe anything that is happening as "negotiations," but in so far as anything is happening, we have information.

I take it the Taoiseach is receiving information?
