Vol. 218 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government what the present position is in regard to the provision of a water supply for the Castle-magner and Kilbrin areas, County Cork.

A preliminary report from Cork County Council on the Newmarket/Knocknagree regional water supply scheme which will serve these areas is at present being examined in my Department.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government the cause for delay in providing the proposed piped water scheme for the Ardfert district, County Kerry, which is long overdue, especially when work on the new sewerage scheme has been completed for some time.

I have already approved of the technical details for the proposed regional water supply for Ardfert and the county council's loan proposals are at present under consideration. I am informed that the existing piped water supply in Ardfert is adequate for the new sewerage scheme which is now in operation.

It is not adequate.

I shall check on that.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that Monaghan County Council applied for sanction to borrow £72,000 for the Scotstown-Ballinode water and sewerage scheme; and that the tender has been sanctioned and the contract signed; and when the county council may expect to receive sanction for the loan.

Monaghan County Council's application for a loan for these schemes is at present under consideration. I am not in a position at present to say when sanction will be accorded to the loan. I am not aware that a contract for this work has been signed.

My information is that it has been sanctioned and signed but they cannot go on with the job because the Minister has not sanctioned the loan. Perhaps the Minister would comment on that?

I shall check on it. I lack the information that the contract has been signed.

If it is true, may we assume sanction will be forthcoming forthwith?

The Deputy may not assume anything. I have told the Deputy I shall check to find out if the contract has been signed.

And if it is, may we assume it will go on or does this drought affect this also?

We shall continue our consideration of it.

May we assume that if what Deputy Dillon has said is so, the manager will get a rap on the knuckles?

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government the position of the proposal of the Kerry County Council to provide a sewerage scheme for Fenit, Tralee; and the cause of delay in inviting tenders to carry out the work.

I have already approved contract documents for the proposed sewerage scheme at Fenit. Delay in advertising this scheme for tenders is, I understand, due mainly to Kerry County Council's difficulty in finalising acquisition of lands necessary for the scheme.
