Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Transfers of Fish.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

112 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the concern of many anglers in relation to the removal of large numbers of fish from one source to another by unauthorised persons; the plans, if any, he has to deal with the issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2739/98]

Neither I nor the Department have been made aware of any recent unauthorised transfers of large numbers of fish from one source to another. All such fish movements for, inter alia, transplantation or stocking purposes are required to be authorised under section 14 of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959. If the Deputy is in a position to supply me with details of any such suspected unauthorised activity, I will arrange to have the matter fully investigated by the regional fisheries board responsible.
