Vol. 218 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sales of Scotch Whisky at Shannon.

3.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if, in view of the fact that the United States has imposed drastic restrictions on the quantity of duty-free spirits which may be taken into the US by returning tourists, he will ensure that the sale of Scotch whisky will be discontinued at the Shannon duty free shop.

I am not satisfied that any useful purpose would be served by discontinuing the sale of Scotch whisky at the Shannon Airport duty-free shop. Many of those who purchased duty-free spirits are not US residents and are, therefore, not affected by the new restrictions. It is hoped that the impact of the restrictions will be appreciably reduced by an improved sales campaign and that sales of Irish whiskey will be maintained at least equal to those of previous years. In any event, if the sale of Scotch whisky were to be stopped, passengers would not necessarily buy Irish instead.
