Vol. 218 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Tests for Motorists.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any proposals before his Department for the introduction of medical tests for would-be motorists; and if he considers such tests necessary.

Under existing law, certain persons must pass a full-scale medical examination before they may obtain licences to drive mechanically propelled vehicles and there is also provision whereby, in certain circumstances, holders of licences may be required to pass such a medical examination before continuing to drive. I am not satisfied of the necessity to extend the present statutory provisions in regard to full medical examination but I have under consideration proposals for an eyesight test for new drivers.
