Vol. 218 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Monofilament Nets.

34.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has yet received a report on the inquiry held into the use of monofilament nets for salmon fishing; and if he will expedite his decision in this matter so that fishermen may make their plans for the coming fishing season regarding the purchase of gear.

I have received the report referred to and I will announce my decision in the matter very shortly.

Is the Minister aware that the fishermen involved were assured that they would be told of the results a month after the holding of the inquiry and it is now more than that since the inquiry was held?

I was not aware that they were given that assurance.

I understand that that was the assurance given by the Chairman of the inquiry.

The Chairman may have been referring to the results of the inquiry as found by him, but then the report is submitted to me and I have to study it.

Do not take too long because these fishermen have to make their plans for the coming season. Will the Minister make a quick decision?
