Vol. 218 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Identity Cards for Travel to Britain.

4.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is aware of suggestions made by an English MP that a system of identity cards should be introduced for Irish people travelling to England; and if he will indicate to the British Government that such a proposal is unacceptable here.

5.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for External Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the report in which the suggestion is made that the introduction of passports between Britain and Ireland is contemplated; and if this proposal has been discussed in the course of the free trade talks.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 4 and 5 together.

I have seen the reports referred to. No such proposal has been made by the British Government, or is expected from them nor was the matter discussed in the course of the recent trade negotiations.
