Vol. 218 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Achill Island Water Supply.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the cause of the delay in providing extensions of the water supply to homes of people in Achill Island, County Mayo; and if he will take the necessary steps to have supply made available as soon as possible.

I have already approved of the preliminary report and drawings for Stages 2 and 3 of the Achill Island Regional Water Supply Extensions Schemes. I understand that Mayo County Council have requested their consulting engineer to prepare contract documents for these stages. Examination of preliminary report and drawings for Stage 4 has been deferred pending receipt of a further report from the local authority on some aspects of the proposal.

Can the Minister say when the final part of the work will be undertaken?

I am afraid I have not an idea. Some of the reports are at the preliminary stage and some are at an advanced stage, so I could not hazard a guess.

The Minister will bear in mind that Achill is one of our most important holiday resorts and take whatever steps are necessary to urge the local authority to get on with the job. The people need this scheme urgently.

The council are on to this at the moment. The Deputy is a member of the local authority and is probably doing his share of pushing there.

I will push there all right.
