Vol. 218 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Drainage Schemes.

17.

andMr. Lyons asked the Minister for Finance if a survey of the Corrib-Mask-Robe catchment area has been carried out; and, if so, when the work will start.

The engineering survey of this catchment has been completed and work on the design and preparation of the scheme is going ahead. In order to expedite commencement of actual drainage works it is proposed to make a start on the Corrib-Headford section and the preparation of that scheme is well advanced. Until the formal requirements of the Act in regard to exhibition, etc. have been complied with, I cannot say when work on the ground will be begun but, if all goes well, I hope that a start can be made in the next financial year.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take immediate steps to conclude the Corrib drainage scheme by having the tributaries thereto cleaned and drained.

Work has been completed on all the tributaries included in the Corrib-Clare drainage scheme except on the upper part of the Birmingham river and its tributaries, from which the water supply for the town of Tuam is taken. Work on that section has had to be deferred until a scheme for the Tuam water supply has been dealt with by the Galway County Council.

The reason I put down this question was to ask the Parliamentary Secretary if it would be possible, in regard to drains partly done under the Corrib scheme, to have further work carried out on them. For instance, a drain may have been pegged for 600 yards and the engineer in charge may have done approximately 400 yards.

The Deputy is making a desperate effort to make a speech.

That was the idea of putting down the question.

It is very like a speech.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary consider reopening it and spending a few hundred thousand on it?

The Deputy knows he can only ask a question now.
