Vol. 219 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Subsidy on Exported Butter.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the amount of subsidy per pound paid on Kerrygold butter exported to Great Britain; and whether all butter sold under this brand is manufactured and packed in Ireland.

The Exchequer subsidy paid in respect of Kerrygold butter exported to Great Britain is at present estimated at 1/7½d. per lb.

All butter sold in Great Britain under the Kerrygold brand is manufactured in Ireland and packed in the Kerrygold wrapper in Great Britain.

Could the Minister say why the butter is not packed in Ireland?

I understand that from a sales point of view it is important to have the butter transported in bulk in order to have it available for wrapping at the point of sale.

That is a good excuse anyway.
