Vol. 219 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Travelling Expenses of Vocational School Pupils.

54.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that under the present scheme of grants operated by South Tipperary towards travelling expenses for pupils attending Clonmel Technical Institute three pupils have been unable to obtain grants because they reside in Ballymacarberry, County Waterford; and if he will initiate a system whereby local authorities could co-operate in such cases to ensure that where, as in this case, the pupils are attending the educational establishment nearest their homes they are not refused grants because they live in a different local authority area.

The County Tipperary (SR) Vocational Education Committee operate a scheme of entrance scholarships which are confined to students from their administrative area who live long distances from vocational schools. I have no information as to the number of County Waterford students at Clonmel vocational school who would qualify for the award of scholarships were it not for the residential clause which renders them ineligible for an award.

I see no objection to County Waterford students competing for entrance scholarships awarded by County Waterford Vocational Education Committee and holding such scholarships at vocational schools in County Tipperary (SR). The matter is one for arrangement by the two vocational education committees.
