Vol. 219 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children's Clothing.

46.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether there is any legislation requiring clothing manufacturers and others to mark children's clothing inflammable or noninflammable; and if there is no such legislation if he will consider the introduction thereof as a matter of urgency.

There are no requirements of this nature in force at present. The Institute for Industrial Research and Standards are preparing specifications covering the flame resistance rating of children's nightwear, and I expect to receive the specification in the near future.

I will then consider whether I should declare these specifications compulsory, by Order. The legislative authority for the making of such an Order is set out in section 44 of the Industrial Research and Standards Act, 1961, which enables me to prescribe a compulsory standard for a commodity where the safety of the purchasing public is concerned.
