Vol. 220 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tourist Income.

4.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state the value of the tourist industry in each of the last three years, indicating the net income derived from it and the number of tourists who came to Ireland; and if he has any indications as to the numbers who will come this year and the prospective income.

As the reply to the first part of the question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Bord Fáilte expect that the number of visitors and income from tourism in 1966 will continue to increase and that total income, excluding the foreign receipts of Irish transport companies, will reach £74 million.

Following is the statement:

This table includes statistics in respect of day-trippers, mainly by car, and including a large volume of local cross-Border traffic. In 1964, day-trippers are estimated to have made 9,810,000 visits inwards.

The figures in column 2 do not include the foreign receipts of Irish transport companies.

*This is a preliminary estimate by Bord Fáilte. The official Central Statistics Office figure is not yet available.
