Vol. 221 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Compound Fertiliser.

66.

andMr. Creed asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will state the percentage sand or limestone used in the manufacture of compound fertiliser.

Limestone is not used to any significant extent in the manufacture of compound fertilisers. Sand is used to keep the analyses to the standard figures in certain less concentrated fertilisers, such as potassic super (0.5.10) and special potato manure (4.4.8), the percentage being normally between 10 and 15.

Would the Minister agree that what the farmers are doing is paying so much a ton for sand?

No, I would not agree. These are two particularly popular types of fertilisers. It is necessary to have a filler and sand has to be used for that purpose.

Is it not as well that the people who are buying this should know exactly what they are paying for?

They will know from now on.
