Vol. 221 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land for Agricultural Workers.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the proposed repeal of section 96 of the Irish Land Act, 1903, will relieve the Land Commission of a statutory obligation to make land available to local authorities for the purposes of accommodating agricultural workers with cottages and plots; and if he will make an explanatory statement.

I am advised that section 96 of the Irish Land Act, 1903, relates to the making of schemes only for the accommodation of agricultural labourers on estates which are the subject of proceedings by the Land Commission. This limited responsibility has been superseded by the wider provisions of later Land Acts notably, section 31 (d) of the Land Act, 1923, section 27 of the Land Act, 1936, and section 29 of the Land Act, 1950, under which Land Commission practice generally is to leave the labourers concerned in their existing houses, or failing that to provide other houses for them.
