Vol. 221 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building of Houses.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in respect of (a) Dublin County Council and (b) Ballymun housing scheme for (1) 1965-66 and (2) 1966-67 the number of houses completed or likely to be completed, and the estimated expenditure from State sources.

Dublin County Council expect to complete 244 dwellings in the current financial year, and 190 dwellings and 19 chalets in 1966-67 on the basis of schemes already approved.

It is estimated that issues from the Local Loans Fund in respect of the Council's housing schemes will be approximately £345,000 in the present financial year, and will be about £320,000 in 1966-67 in respect of schemes already approved.

The contractors expect to complete about 50 dwellings in the Ballymun project during the current month and more than 900 during 1966-67. The estimated expenditure will be approximately £1,000,000 in 1965-66 and £3,500,000 in 1966-67.

Would the Minister tell us when he expects the first hand-over of houses in Ballymun and also when he expects the first hand-over of flats?

I can tell the Deputy with regard to houses. It will be as soon as it is dry enough to allow people into them.

Are the houses completed?

The houses are completed. The real problem, as the Deputy is aware, is that conditions have been deplorable and the surroundings are not dried out.

Has the Minister any information with regard to the flats?

I have, but I have not got it here.

How many houses are completed and ready for occupation?

I do not really know.

The Minister said, in his reply, that 50 will be handed over next month.

They will be handed over this month.

How many are completed?

I am not going to make a guess about that because these guesses have a habit of being brought back.

They are not always accurate.

When will they be handed over?

As soon as the weather conditions have improved. This takes quite a considerable time.

All the bulldozer drivers got a weakness when they saw the Budget.
