Vol. 222 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Panel of Quantity Surveyors.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will request Dublin County Council and Dún Laoghaire Borough Corporation to set up panels of quantity surveyors to ensure a fair distribution of the available work among that profession.

There are no quantity surveyors on the permanent staffs of Dublin County Council and Dún Laoghaire Corporation. These local authorities engage quantity surveyors as consultants on a fee basis as and when they require them. Conditions of appointment and scale of fees for quantity surveyors engaged for local authority housing schemes are set out in a circular letter issued to local authorities. My approval to appointments in accordance with the terms of the circular letter is not necessary, so that the local authorities are free to appoint whom they please. The question of setting up panels of quantity surveyors, therefore, is a matter for the local authorities concerned, and in the circumstances I do not consider that it would be appropriate for me to take the course suggested by the Deputy.
