Vol. 222 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Total Road Accidents.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the rising total of fatal accidents on the roads as shown by the statistics for January-February of this year, he proposes to introduce new legislation or to initiate a greater safety drive as a means of reducing the appalling toll.

As regards legislation, the preparation of a Bill to amend the Road Traffic Act, 1961, is at an advanced stage. As regards other aspects of the road safety problem I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to a question, No. 38 of the 8th February, in which I dealt at length with the measures which are being taken to promote road safety.
