Vol. 222 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Road Improvements.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any proposals before his Department for the by-passing of the town of Ballisodare, County Sligo with a new trunk road, T.3, or for the widening of the narrow, dangerous bottleneck bridge at Ballisodare.

Preliminary outline proposals for the improvement of the section of T.3 between Collooney and Sligo submitted by Sligo County Council are under consideration in my Department. Pending completion of studies at present in progress, related to the formulation of a comprehensive programme of arterial road improvements as envisaged in the Second Programme for Economic Expansion, and of investigations necessary to determine the appropriate design standard to be adopted for the road in question having regard to present and future traffic volumes, I am not in a position to indicate the precise form the projected improvement should take.

As regards the bridge at Ballisodare, draft contract documents for a scheme which envisages reconstruction of the bridge by widening the carriageway and the provision of two new footpaths were recently received in my Department from Sligo County Council and are at present under consideration.
