Vol. 222 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Testing of Cars.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the report that less than five per cent of cars tested in the Road Safety Council's free car check scheme carried out last December were found to be faultless, he will state what measures he proposes to take to rectify the matter.

Power already exists to deal with mechanically propelled vehicles which are dangerously defective or which contravene various regulations made under the Road Traffic Act, 1961. The enforcement of these provisions is a matter for the Garda Síochána.

In addition to these provisions, it is proposed, as already announced to take power to introduce a system of "spot checks" of vehicles in use on the public roads. The formulation of a general scheme for periodic testing is proceeding.
