Vol. 330 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Harbours.

38.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the improvements, if any, it is intended to carry out at Creevy Pier, Ballyshannon, County Donegal.

Cavan-Monaghan): According to the information available to my Department the fish landings at Creevy Pier would not justify the expenditure that would be required to defray the cost of the improvements requested.

39.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the position regarding the dredging of Burtonport Harbour, County Donegal.

(Cavan-Monaghan): A scheme for the dredging of Burtonport Harbour has been approved and will be considered for execution in 1982 as part of the harbour development programme in the light of the financial resources available for this programme.

Would the Minister indicate why this scheme was not proceeded with this year in view of the pressing need for it?

(Cavan-Monaghan): I am sure the Deputy is aware that the work has been discussed since 1978. It is a Gaeltacht area and the scheme necessitated discussions between my Department and the Department of the Gaeltacht. The matter apparently became very urgent in October 1980 and perhaps the Deputy will appreciate how urgent it became in Donegal at that time.

Is cuimhin liom é agus is cuimhin leis an Aire é freisin.

(Cavan-Monaghan): The Deputy probably also knows that it was a matter for financing by the two Departments. My Department provided the necessary money but the Department of the Gaeltacht have been reluctant to come along with their share of the money, and that is the cause of the delay.

In other words, give me the tools and I will finish the job.
