Vol. 222 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage Workers.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to introduce a sick pay scheme for drainage workers.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to his question an 3rd instant in regard to sick pay. Drainage workers cannot be considered apart from the general body of workers.

In view of the fact that practically all decent employers are now operating some form of sick pay scheme, would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that it is time the State should attempt to prove that they, too, are decent employers and bring in a sick pay scheme for these workers?

The Deputy was told on 3rd May that the matter was under consideration.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that this matter could remain under consideration for a number of years unless somebody takes the trouble to remind the Parliamentary Secretary occasionally that it has not been finalised?

The Deputy can take it that he has now taken that trouble.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to increase the wages of drainage workers by 20/- per week.

This matter is under consideration, and I will make an announcement as soon as possible.
