Vol. 222 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Witnesses' Expenses.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount paid in each of the last five years by way of witnesses' expenses in Garda prosecutions.

The expenditure incurred from the Vote for Law Charges on witnesses' expenses relates not alone to prosecutions by the Garda Síochána but also to prosecutions at the suit of the Attorney General. It also covers payments to witnesses in certain civil cases and some minor miscellaneous charges. It is not possible readily to segregate the total amounts spent as between these different categories.

The expenditure thus incurred during each of the five years concerned has been as follows:

£

1961-62

16,651

1962-63

17,144

1963-64

24,878

1964-65

21,454

1965-66

26,427
