Vol. 223 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Border Motor Tourists.

3.

asked the Taoiseach the number of cross-Border motoring tourists who entered the Republic between 1st May 1965 and 22nd June, 1965, and between 1st May 1966 and 22nd June 1966.

The particulars requested by the Deputy are not available.

The only short-term particulars available in respect of inward cross-border motor traffic relate to the total number of private motor vehicles (including motor-cycles etc.) which entered the State through the land frontier posts. For the seven weeks ended 19th June, 1966 the total was 1,275,000 motor vehicles as compared with 1,107,000 motor vehicles in the corresponding period of 1965. These figures relate to all private motor vehicles including these registered in the State. It has been estimated that approximately two-thirds of those vehicles were not registered in the State.

They did not come across to buy cheap petrol either.

Question No. 4 postponed.
