Vol. 223 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing for Clonmel Army Personnel.

52.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider building accommodation for Army personnel in Clonmel, County Tipperary; and if any negotiations have taken place between his Department and Clonmel Corporation regarding this matter.

It is assumed that the Deputy's question relates to the building of houses for married NCOs. and privates at Clonmel.

In concluding the debate on the Vote for Defence on the 3rd May last, I stressed that the provision of housing is primarily a matter for local authorities and a soldier has an equal claim on local authority houses with any member of the community in the same income group. The policy of my Department is to supplement the efforts of local authorities where the need is greatest.

There have been no formal negotiations of the type referred to by the Deputy.
