Vol. 224 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - District Probate Registries.

15.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if after the commencement of the Succession Act on 1st January, 1967, he intends to establish District Probate Registries; if so, how many and in what centres; if he will state the statutory or other authority under which he proposes to make appointments; and what professional or other qualifications will be required of appointees.

In addition to continuing the six existing District Probate Registries at Castlebar, Cavan, Cork, Kilkenny, Limerick and Waterford, I propose to make an Order under section 129 of the Succession Act, 1965, establishing new Registries at Clonmel, Dundalk, Galway, Lifford, Mullingar, Sligo, Tralee and Wexford. I intend to continue the existing arrangement of having the duties of District Probate Registrar discharged by the County Registrar of the county where the Registry is situated. The necessary power to do so is contained in section 9 of the Court Officers Act, 1945.
