Vol. 224 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Exports to Iron Curtain Countries.

28.

andMr. T. O'Donnell asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the shortage of beef supplies behind the Iron Curtain; and, if so, if he will consider the potential of sales of processed meat to that area and so offset the adverse trade balance with countries concerned.

The possibilities of obtaining remunerative export outlets for Irish cattle and beef in Eastern Europe and in all other potential markets are being kept under constant review. I would point out, however, that substantial numbers of cattle and also quantities of beef have been exported this year by Eastern European countries to the EEC area. Indeed, it has recently been reported that authorities in the EEC have been considering the introduction of additional restrictions on imports of cattle and beef from Eastern Europe.

Would the Minister indicate what contacts he has for securing markets in the area mentioned in the question?

We have a variety of diplomatic and trading contacts.

We have no diplomatic relations with these countries.

Most of these countries have Embassies or High Commissioners in London.

Our contacts are through British channels?
