Vol. 224 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arranmore Island Resident Doctor.

30.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that there has been no resident doctor on Arranmore Island, County Donegal for some time past; and if he will take immediate steps to ensure that at least a locum tenens takes up duty there before the winter sets in.

I am aware that there is at present no resident doctor on Arranmore Island, County Donegal, despite repeated efforts made during the past two years to obtain one and although remuneration in excess of the standard remuneration for a district medical officer has been offered.

As I am fully aware of the need for the services of a resident doctor on the island, I propose to agree to a further increase in the remuneration applicable to this particular post, in the hope that a permanent appointment will be made as a result of re-advertisement of the vacancy in the near future.

I understand that the local authority are hopeful that, in the meantime, the services of a resident doctor in a temporary capacity will be secured in response to a recent advertisement.
