Question No. 27.

27.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in respect of the years 1960-61 and 1965-66 the total expenditure on home assistance and on school meals.

The total expenditure in respect of the year 1960-61 on home assistance and school meals was £582,978 and £176,556 respectively.

On a point of order——

What is the point of order?

In respect of the year 1965-66, £739,750 was expended on home assistance and, in respect of the year 1964-65, £214,567 was expended on school meals.

Deputies

Chair.

In view of the fact that at least 14 supplementary questions were allowed on earlier questions, surely Deputy Treacy is entitled to ask more than one supplementary question on the subject matter of Question No. 25 which the considers to be a very important matter?

Three supplementary questions have been asked. There are 15 minutes left to deal with up to No. 60. It is the duty of the Chair to see to it that those at the bottom of the page get as much consideration as those at the top of the page. That is why I ration the supplementary questions.

Surely we all know that a number of the questions will, as usual, be dealt with tomorrow and will be finished in half an hour?

There will be a number of questions tomorrow, also.

The Chair was allowing Deputy Treacy to ask a supplementary question when the Minister commenced to reply to the next question. It is a discourtesy to the Chair as well as to Deputy Treacy.

It is a great national scandal and the Minister knows it.

The next question was called and I answered it. I heard nobody talking except Deputy Tully and Deputy Treacy. I have not finished replying to Question No. 27, the remainder of the reply to which reads as follows:

Complete figures for school meals in respect of 1965-66 are not available.

A little more manners would not be out of place.
