Vol. 225 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Means Test for Blind Old Age Pensions.

24.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether the means test for blind old age pensioners will be abolished.

The answer is in the negative.

Mr. O'Leary

Has the Minister done any re-thinking since he last gave his answer in the negative to this question? Can he not see a case for relieving blind old age pensioners of this means test?

No; I think the means test is a fundamental part of social assistance.

Mr. O'Leary

Even for this category of blind old age pensioners?

For all categories. The equitable distribution of the money available necessitates a means test. Otherwise, it would not be possible to distribute the money equitably among people who satisfy the other conditions.
