Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Education what percentage of students failed (a) the intermediate certificate French examination, (b) the pass leaving certificate French examination, and (c) the honours leaving certificate French examination; and what percentage obtained honours in (i) the intermediate certificate French examination, and (ii) the leaving certificate French examination in 1966.

Thirty-four per cent of students who took French failed the subject at the intermediate certificate examination; of those who took the pass paper in French at the leaving certificate examination, 13 per cent failed, and of those who took the honours paper, 5½ per cent failed.

Thirty-two per cent of those who took French obtained honours in the subject at the intermediate certificate examination; and 24 per cent of all those who took French or 51 per cent of those who took the honours paper obtained honours in the subject at the leaving certificate examination.
