Vol. 225 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Expenditure on Secondary Schools.

50.

asked the Minister for Education the total amount of money for the erection of secondary schools in respect of which the State is committed to pay capital and interest; and the amount thereof paid by the State to date.

Mr. O'Malley

Payment of grants under the scheme of building grants for secondary schools consists of meeting up to 60 per cent of the repayments, both capital and interest, on loans obtained by managers to meet the cost of building.

The total amount of building costs towards which the State is to date committed to contribute under the scheme is about £4,250,000. The State will be liable for capital and interest repayments in respect of £2,500,000 of this amount.

The stage of repayment of loans by managers is only now being reached and payments by the State to date amount to £13,350.

Will the Minister say when the first payments were made and in respect of what schools?

Mr. O'Malley

Only two payments have been made to date. I have not got the particulars of the schools.

When were they paid?

Mr. O'Malley

Quite recently.

How recently?

Mr. O'Malley

In the past few months.
