Vol. 225 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rhodesian Situation.

18.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the comments of the Irish delegate in the Trusteeship Committee of the United Nations on the use of force in Rhodesia is official Government policy; and whether he considers that a policy of sanctions may yet prove effective in bringing the Smith regime to an end.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative.

The answer to the second part is that the Security Council of the United Nations called on all members to adopt a policy of economic sanctions against Rhodesia. We have fully implemented the Security Council's resolutions and it is to be hoped that with the cooperation of all member States these measures may prove effective in securing equal rights and freedom for all the people of Rhodesia.
