Vol. 225 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Schools.

75.

asked the Minister for Education when repairs, including water and sewerage repairs, will be carried out to the national school at Barrahaurin, Donoughmore, County Cork; and if he will sanction the appointment of a second teacher to this school.

Mr. O'Malley

Barrahaurin national school is a one-teacher school. The enrolment is not sufficient to warrant the appointment of a second teacher. I am satisfied that the educational interests of the children in the area would best be served by the amalgamation of the school with another school in the parish, and I am having an investigation made as to how such an amalgamation might most suitably be effected.

In the meantime, the Commissioners of Public Works are being asked to recommend what minor works might be carried out at the Barrahaurin school to render it suitable for such period as it will continue to be required.

76.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the toilet facilities at Brooklodge national school, County Cork consist of dry closets; and if he will take immediate steps to have the public water supply passing the school gate availed of to provide at least flush water closets instead of the present primitive arrangements.

Mr. O'Malley

I am aware that the toilet facilities at the Brooklodge national school consist of dry closets. A grant has been sanctioned towards the cost of providing water closets at the school. Arrangements will be made with the Commissioners of Public Works to have the work carried out at the earliest possible date.
