Vol. 225 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state, in respect of the increase of 13,000 in the number of unemployed since September last, the number of persons in each occupational category who became disemployed.

The particulars requested by the Deputy are not available since a classification by occupation of the number of persons on the Live Register is carried out only in respect of a date at the end of each quarter. However, the industrial analysis of the Live Register for mid-October, 1966, recently issued to all Deputies shows, for each industry, the change since mid-September, 1966, in the number of persons on the Live Register. The corresponding analysis for 18 November is at present being compiled and will be issued as soon as possible—probably within the next three weeks.

3.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of persons who would be on the Live Register of unemployed if it were at present compiled on the basis which operated prior to 7th January, 1966.

The detailed description of the revised method of publication of unemployment statistics, given in the December, 1965, issue of the Irish Statistical Bulletin, explains that inevitably the change in the method of assessing "means" in respect of certain smallholders under the Unemployment Assistance Acts has introduced a break in the continuity of the Live Register figures. Since it is not administratively feasible to distinguish the "newly eligible smallholders" from the "smallholders" who were previously qualified, it is not possible to provide the estimate requested by the Deputy.

We were told, when the change was made, that it would be possible.
