Vol. 225 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Persons at Work.

4.

(South Tipperary) asked the Taoiseach the total number of people at work at the latest available date of 1966; and the total number of people at work for the corresponding period of each year from 1956 onwards, showing the distribution as between agricultural and industrial employment.

An estimate is made of the total number of persons at work in respect of the month of April each year, but such estimates are not available until early the following year because of the fact that the returns on which these estimates are based take a considerable time to collect. The latest estimate available is in respect of April, 1965.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the information requested for each year 1956 to 1965. The estimates for the years 1962 to 1965 will be revised when relevant data become available from the 1966 Census of Population.

Following is the statement:—

Is it not true there are roughly 70,000 fewer people at work now as compared with 1956?

I do not think that is so. The population has, of course, increased.

If that is so, then there should be more people at work.

The Deputy was very worried about the 97,000 unemployed

We were worried about "Let Lemass Lead On". It is true there are 70,000 and that the number has increased by 13,000 in the past three months.
