Vol. 225 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grand Canal.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the present position regarding Dublin Corporation's proposals to close part of the Grand Canal.

Following preliminary consideration of the original proposal which involved closure of part of the Grand Canal, alternative proposals for the drainage of the Dublin South West area were prepared by the Dublin Corporation at the request of my predecessor. These alternative proposals are at present under examination.

Is the Minister aware that Dublin Corporation, as such, that is to say, the City Council, have never made any proposals in this matter at all? There was simply a submission by the technical people. Could the Minister give any assurance as to when a decision will be taken in this matter, having regard to the need for drainage on the south-west side of the city?

Proposals were submitted to my Department by Dublin Corporation.

But not with the blessing of the elected representatives of the City Council.

I do not know anything about that. I know proposals were submitted to the Department. Those were referred back for reconsideration, and investigation, or possible alternatives. Those alternatives are now under examination.
