Vol. 225 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Factory Bacon Brands.

10.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether his attention has been drawn to recent reports that the Pigs and Bacon Commission has requested the removal of individual factory brands from Irish bacon; and if he is in a position to make a statement on the position.

I understand that the Pigs and Bacon Commission decided recently that, where it was necessary in the interests of improved selling arrangements for Irish bacon on the British market, bacon purchased by the Commission for export to Britain should not bear a factory brand. The bacon will, of course, continue to be branded as Irish and to have also a factory identification number.

Could the Minister say if a request has been received in the Department from any firm wishing to be excluded——

I am not aware of it but I would not be surprised.

What will the Minister's reaction be?

I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that it is a situation I should not care to comment on now.
