Vol. 226 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - UCC Science Buildings.

90.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Education the total estimated cost of the new science buildings at University College, Cork; the estimated time for completion; the amount allocated by his Department for the work for the forthcoming year; and the actual or estimated allocations for each year until completion.

Mr. O'Malley

The original total estimate of the cost of this project based on the amount of the lowest tender for the main contract for the work was £1,503,000 and was calculated on the basis of approximate estimates of cost for the mechanical and electrical services. The lowest tenders received for the contracts for these services were, however, in excess of the approximate estimates with the result that the figure of total estimated cost of the project has been revised to £1,578,925, and sanctioned accordingly.

The contract for the erection of the building will provide for completion of the work within 130 weeks from the date of commencement.

It is proposed to provide £275,000 in the Vote for Universities and Colleges for the purpose of this project in 1967-68.

It is not feasible to state at this stage the amounts which will be provided in the Vote for Universities and Colleges for this purpose in the financial years subsequent to 1967-68.
