Vol. 226 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether any information has yet been received by the Government on the probable results of the latest British initiative in regard to entry to the EEC.

As indicated by the British Prime Minister in Parliament on the 10th November, the purpose of the discussions which he and the Foreign Secretary are having with the Governments of the Member countries is "to see whether the conditions exist —or do not exist—for fruitful negotiations and the basis on which such negotiations could take place".

Whether or not the British application will be revived will no doubt depend on the British Government's assessment of the situation following the conclusion of Mr. Wilson's series of visits to the capitals of the Six. As already announced, I expect to have a further meeting with Mr. Wilson about that time.

Due to what appears to be the lack of results from the British initiative, is it now the Minister's opinion that the application of this country will be delayed, that the question of our entry is postponed at this period of time? Is this the Taoiseach's opinion?

The Deputy bases his supplementary question on a premise on which I do not think he is entitled to base it. I do not know whether these talks have been a success or not, but that is for the British Government to determine in time.

If the British Government decide not to make an application, does that mean we do not make an application?

We shall consider that situation if and when it arises.
