Vol. 226 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Days Lost through Industrial Disputes.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the number of days per 1,000 persons employed in the Republic of Ireland lost through industrial disputes in each of the years 1964 to 1966, inclusive.

The number of days lost through industrial disputes in all sectors of the economy is estimated at 808 days per 1,000 of total employees in 1964 and 811 in 1965. The corresponding preliminary estimate for 1966 is 1,150 days.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary care to state what that would be as a percentage of those on the unemployed register?

The Deputy is taking me at a slight disadvantage if he engages in percentages right now.

I shall put down a question for next week.

Could I ask the Parliamentary Secretary if the figure he now furnishes provides us with the doubtful distinction of the triple crown of heading all countries in Europe for days lost in industrial disputes per thousand of the employed population, according to the International Labour Office Report?

The figures for 1966 are preliminary estimates. When we have the complete figures for the other countries, I hope to be able to give the answer with regard to the triple crown.

If they subsequently prove to be correct, does it give us that doubtful distinction?

That seems to be a separate question.
