Vol. 226 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Removal of Cars from Clearways.

44.

asked the Minister for Justice the average cost per car to date of removing stationary cars from clearways.

In the period from 5th December 1966, to 8th February 1967, a total of 240 vehicles were removed by the Garda from the clearways in Dublin. The towing-vehicle was employed in the removal of 129 of those vehicles. The clearways are patrolled by gardaí and the removal of vehicles is a part only of the general supervision exercised. Any calculation of the cost of the removals alone would be highly conjectural.

It is estimated that it cost £396 to operate the towing vehicle in the period in question. That figure includes the pay of its crew.

45.

asked the Minister for Justice whether fines have been imposed in respect of all cars removed to date from clearways.

Fine-on-the-spot notices were affixed to all cars removed from the clearways, save in the case of a few vehicles that had genuinely broken down.

The remaining seven questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.

On 16th February I addressed Question No. 73 to the Minister for Finance. With your permission, Sir, I propose to raise it on the Adjournment.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.
