asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give particulars of postal, telegraph and telephone services for 1964-65 and 1965-66 in the terms of the reply to Question No. 152 of 8th March, 1966.

The information required by the Deputy is as follows:

(1) Statement showing for the Telephone Service percentage increase over 1947 in (a) telephone traffic, (b) subscribers, (c) mileage of trunk circuits, (d) numbers of staff for the years ended 31/12/1964 and 31/12/1965.

(ii) The following table shows on the bases requested the amount expended under the Telephone Capital Acts in the years 1964-65 and 1965-66.

The total expended in the various categories does not correspond with the amount expended under the Acts as it is affected by the extent to which stocks of capital stores are run down or augmented. The amounts in each category have been expressed as percentages of the total cost of telephone capital works.

(iii) The following table shows, in respect of each service in 1964-65 and 1965-66 the total expenditure on salaries and wages expressed as a percentage of the total receipts credited as income in the Commercial Accounts. Salaries and wages of staff engaged on capital development and renewal works are excluded as these are covered in the Commercial Accounts by interest and depreciation provisions.
