Vol. 227 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumption of Bread and Flour.

9.

asked the Taoiseach the average weekly consumption of bread and flour per person in the State.

The average weekly consumption per person of bread and flour was 2.7 lb. and 1.4 lb. respectively in 1965. This is the latest year for which figures are available.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary realise that the increase in the price of bread and flour will work out at something over 2/- per week for a husband, wife and four children?

When there is a rise in the standard of living, the consumption of bread decreases.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary also aware that when you have a rising cost of living, the people in the lower income group are compelled to eat more bread so that the increase for them will be 4/- or 5/- a week?

The increase was given after due consideration of all the factors by the special Prices Advisory Body.

What about the social service classes?

Every year since Fianna Fáil have been in office these people got reasonable increases.
