Vol. 227 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rosslare-Le Havre Shipping Service.

9.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will take the necessary steps to establish a shipping service for passengers, motor-cars and freight between Rosslare harbour and Le Havre, in view of the anticipated increase in trade and tourism between Ireland and Europe and the fact that Rosslare harbour is the nearest port to Europe.

I have been advised by Irish Shipping Ltd. that they are actively investigating the possibility of such a shipping service between this country and Le Havre. The choice of a terminal port in this country is, however, a matter to be determined solely by the company on operational and commercial considerations.

Which shipping company?

Irish Shipping Limited.

Could this not also be considered by the Rosslare-Fishguard Harbours and Railways Company?

They are not engaged in any such negotiation. I do not think it is their policy at the moment to do anything except run boats between Rosslare and Fishguard.

Is it possible that the company will only consider Irish ports from which Irish Shipping vessels sail?

They will consider the port which is best operationally, likely to bring most passengers and which offers cheapest operation.

Will they have regard to proximity of ports to the Continent?

They will have regard to every circumstance.

I take it all the major passenger ports will be considered?

They will be, yes.
