Vol. 227 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Dublin Market Area.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the high standard of property, and of business conducted, in the Dublin south city market area and to the harmful effects which demolition and redevelopment would have on the amenities of that area and adjoining areas, he will ensure that no unnecessary steps are taken to develop the area for a long time to come.

It is a matter for Dublin Corporation as planning authority to consider the question of development in the area referred to, and any proposals for such development that may emerge.

I understand that there are no proposals before the corporation in the matter at present.

Having regard to the inevitable part which the Minister for Local Government ultimately plays in these things, will the Minister use his offices to ensure that this great shopping and business centre is not demolished but rather that if there is further provision of business centres in Dublin they would be in the relatively derelict areas of the city westwards from this shopping centre to Inchicore?

The Deputy is making a speech.

I am asking the Minister to ensure that further development will be on the derelict sites around the city and that there will not be further demolition of sites which are perfectly adequate at the moment.

This matter can only come before me by way of an appeal against a decision by the planning authorities. There is no such proposal before the planning authorities as yet.

Will the Minister bear in mind my advice in this matter?

I agree with the general principles put forward by the Deputy.
