Vol. 227 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Exclusive Fishing Rights.

17.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what provision there is for compensation for fishermen and others who can prove that their means of livelihood have been or will be interfered with by the granting of exclusive fishing rights in public national waters to private individuals with particular reference to a firm (name supplied) and to the recent inquiry in Kenmare and Cahirciveen, County Kerry.

I have not yet made a decision on the two applications by this private company for oyster fishery orders which were the subject of recent public inquiries held by an officer of my Department at Kenmare and Cahirciveen. Any oyster fishery order cannot, however, override an existing right of fishing and the question of payment of compensation does not, therefore, arise.
