Vol. 227 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Engineering and Architectural Fees.

60.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider entering into consultation with the appropriate professional bodies with a view to the establishment of a graded system for the payment of fees on engineering and architectural projects of a major nature on somewhat similar lines to that obtaining in the UK.

The professional bodies concerned have already been consulted in this matter. They have indicated that they are prepared to undertake commissions only within the framework of their published scales of fees.

As the Deputy will be aware it has been suggested in the Report on Full Employment by the National Industrial Economic Council that one of the inflationary factors in building costs may be the method by which the fees of some of the professional services concerned with the building industry are related to the value of the transactions in which they are involved. The Report recommends that the whole question of building costs should be thoroughly studied. This will be done.

61.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of professional fees accruing to date for consultant architectural services at Templemore Barracks, County Tipperary.

The total amount of fees paid to date in respect of architectural services at the Garda training centre in Templemore is £34,174. Pending completion of the final account for the work it is not possible to say precisely what further fees may be due to the architect, but it is estimated that they will be of the order of £1,000.

62.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance the terms of employment or scale of fees arranged for payment of the second consultant employed at Templemore Barracks, County Tipperary to examine and report on the work of the first consultant.

The consulting engineer concerned who has been employed by the Department of Justice will be remunerated on a time basis in accordance with the scales of fees and conditions of engagement of the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland.
