Vol. 227 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Speed Limit Signs.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to resite the 30 mph speed limit signs at Ballyraine, Letterkenny, County Donegal.

I hope to make amending speed limits regulations for County Donegal within the next three months, as part of the current general review. These will deal with all the roads in and around Letterkenny.

Does it take the Minister three months to make up his mind to resite 30 mile speed limit signs which have been dragged through the District Court, through county council chambers, the local chamber of commerce, and for which the former Minister for Local Government came under heavy fire for not taking action? Does it take the Minister for Local Government three further months to make up his mind to resite those speed signs?

A review of speed limits in County Donegal has been completed and the drafting of the amending regulations is in progress. The drafting of the amending regulations takes some considerable time because it is a complicated procedure.

(Cavan): Having regard to the fact that Donegal is a tourist county and that these road signs and speed limits obviously affect tourists very much, would the Minister not consider pediting the matter and reducing the period of three months and getting final alteration of the regulations done with the next month, say?

It will take approximately the length of time I indicated.

Question No. 20

Would the Minister not take into consideration that in the interests of the residents of this locality the county council did everything in their power to resign the road? There are major improvements being carried out there at the moment and these will tend to increase the speed of traffic. Surely it should not take the Minister three months to make up his mind about this matter?

Question No. 20.

Senator McGlinchey, a member of the Fianna Fáil party, might be able to put the case in stronger terms than I am putting it.

It is necessary to amend these regulations and that is being done as speedily as possible.

I am calling Question No. 20.

Is it because the former Minister for Local Government Deputy Blaney, does not want to do it and there is a personal vendetta between him and Senator McGlinchey? The Minister for Agriculture is shaking his head in consent. He does not want to lose the battle.

I am asking Deputy Harte to keep order. If he does not, I will have to make another request to him.

I am only pointing out——

The Deputy takes no notice of the Chair at all. I am asking him to conduct himself and if he does not do that——

With respect, I give all due honour to the Chair.

The Deputy is not giving any respect to the House.

I would like my rights in this House.
